How to view Japanese E-mail and Web Sites on an English Windows Mobile device

Unfortunately Windows Mobile has not yet caught up to desktop Windows desktop in terms of of internationalization. Out of the box you still will not be able to view text using non-roman character sets, which includes of course Japanese.

I don't know of a good commercial solution to this problem, but luckily well know blogger and Windows Mobile expert 'Asukal' has put together a program called 'Let's Japan'. A quick install and you'll be happily reading email and web pages in Japanese.

Here are the current links to these files.

Be sure to check what version of Windows Mobile you are using and download he correct package.

Thanks to Asukal for putting these together and making them available. A big service to the Windows Mobile community.

Note that these files don't give you Japanese input. There are some solutions out there but I'm not aware of a simple one. If anyone has any ideas, please post in the comments or to the Yahoo Group . I'll collect the information and put into a separate blog entry.

There is a rather simple solution to enable both read and write support on WM5/6: Forget about the Let's Japan Pack and turn to Asukal's other great solutions "forgottennationsno5" and "ime_31j_f.cab" (this is the VGA version) and combine them with the "MS Gothic Font for WM5". All in all it will take up roughly 20MB of storage space and break autocomplete of names and the word dictionaries, but it is definitely worth it. Next to keyboard support you get Kana, Kensaku, Romaji and Tegaki inpud methods which puts you on par with any other Japanese phone (ATOK might be a tad more professional though).

CE-STAR is another option used by many people.

Here's the link to CE-Star: http://rasir.com/products/CE-Star.php

Also here's a thread on the Brighthand forums about adding Japanese support.

One thing I should have said with the post, is be very careful when you are experimenting in this area. Back up your data as you may end up having to reset (as I did when I tried installing Let's Japanese to my HTC Cavalier (X02HT equivalent) - obviously not supported). Read all the guidelines carefully and judge the risk factor for yourself before making any big changes.

As CE-Star is a commercial product this should be a safer option than Let's Japanese.

I used Let's Japanese to view Japanese on Tytn II. Worked flawlessly.

I packaged the files to a Zipped file on my site.

The page is in Japanese, but It's the one that says Tytn II Japanese Pack
