X01T First Impression

Today, before attending the UG Windows Mobile in Japan event, I went to the BicCamera at Shibuya to try out the new X01T. I felt the device was very well made, sort of like a cross between the X01T and the Willcom Advanced W-ZERO 3 [es]. Though I didn't have time to try it out, the fingerprint recognition (security) on the back was cool.

The only bad point about this is that it doesn't have an integrated GPS, butI honestly thought the device is worth buying.

X01T - Finally available for Pre Order!

The X01T, which was supposed to come out earlier this year, is now available for preorder through Softbank's online site. This device runs at a 520Mhz supports WVGA(800X480), and has a lot of RAM and ROM. There are two colors for X01T, white and black. The supply stock is limited, so get it when you can! This might become a great competitor to the X01HT which also came out from Sofbank last year or the Willcom's Advanced W-ZERO 3 [es]. I'm hoping Softbank will put out a lot of accessories for this device, especially an optional GPS card.

X02HT now in stores

The HTC X02HT is finally in stores. The shop staff are saying it may not be next month until we see the X01T from Toshiba.

"The Smartphone Market", Press Conference by HTC (Fri. 30 August '07)

HTC's CEO will talk on the global and Japanese smartphone market at the Foreign Correspondents Club of Japan. It will be interesting to see what the response of the press and the market will be to the direct sale of handsets here. Currently,unlike in many other countries, almost all phones are sold by carriers and can only be used on that carrier's network.

"The Smartphone Market"

The Japanese cell phone market has always been a difficult nut for foreign companies to crack. Japan's carriers exercise tight control over the handsets that are sold and set demanding quality standards that have left some foreign companies stumbling.

Taiwan's High Tech Computer Corp. (HTC) is one of the few success stories. Its smart phones, which bundle voice with e-mail, Web browsing and other applications on the Windows Mobile platform, first went on sale here in 2006 and are now available through NTT DoCoMo and Softbank Mobile. Later this year, HTC will take another step in Japan with the launch of direct sales of handsets that will work with any cellular carrier.

Peter Chou, CEO of the Taiwanese company, will visit the club on Friday to discuss the global smartphone market, how Japan stands in relationship to these global trends and the developments we can expect from HTC in regards to the Japanese market over the coming year. He will be joined by John Wang, chief marketing officer of HTC.

Chou's visit will come at a good time. The smart phone market underwent a huge shake up earlier this year when Apple launched its iPhone in the U.S. and now all eyes are on Apple to see when the iconic phone will be released in Europe and Asia.

Two Windows Mobile 6 Phones for the Japanese Market

Softbank today held a press conference and announced two new Windows Mobile 6 phones for the Japanese market:

The X01T marks a return to Windows Mobile device in Japan by Toshiba. Very similar in format (slide out keyboard) to the X01HT from HTC, but with a wide VGA screen. This the device for power users. It feels very solid and the keys are rounded in such a way that may make it better the the X01HT for typing. On sale from mid-August.

The X02HT is HTC's second device for Softbank It is a Windows Mobile (WM) Standard device (formerly called WM Smart Phone, compared to the Toshiba = WM Professional = WM Pocket PC). The absolutely HUGE news for English speakers in the Japan is that this is the first Windows Mobile device ever here that has an English interface option. This opens up the huge foreign enterprise market here and will definitely boost adoption of Windows Mobile in Japan. The Blackberry-like QWERTY keyboard and smaller lighter design will also be popular with many users. Finally in addition to red and white, the X02HT comes in red hot orange! I guarantee these will sell out fast. On sale from end July.

Naturally they both of 3G HSDPA data access and international roaming. I don't have price information as yet, but in his presentation, Masayoshi Son said they would be planning some special campaigns with Microsoft.
