Tytn II and Softbank

Tytn II has arrived here in Japan, and I am using with Softbank at the moment. First off, I must say it is a great device, I really enjoy the device. The sliding keyboard of Tytn II is much better than that of Tytn, since it actually slides out very smoothly. The tilt function is pretty cool, but not that important to me. The integrated GPS is very good, and I could get many satellites reception in Higashi Kurume, Akihabara, and Koenji. If you use Live Search or Google Map, you will be able to see your current position for free.

I am hoping to get a Mapfan map to navigate with GPS soon. More reviews coming soon.

where did you get the tytnII?

I can help you get a Tytn II device, if you'd like. I have an online shop at http://www.hpcnut.co.uk/winmo/shop.htm .

The Tytn II is not in the product list, but I can help you get one.

I'm also using an unlocked TyTn II (with DoCoMo) and I am similarly impressed, I'm glad I waited for this device. HSPDA makes a big difference. I never quite found any of the DoCoMo-branded phones that I've used until now to be really functional enough where I would think of them as a business tool to make my life easier. That's changed. My travel time (on the weekends mostly) is now much more productive.

Bob - did you get flat rate working with a voice plan on DoCoMo?

Hello ismail, I can get a Tytn II for you for $680 if you trade in your X01HT. You can pay me by Paypal or Bank Transfer. If paid in yen (bank transfer), it will be 73,440yen. The retail price for the Tytn II is $899.99.

Once I confirm the payment, it should take about 1 week to arrive in your house.

Paypal is preferred because it is secured.

Is this model available in Japan with English OS?

Andrew Shuttleworth said...

This model is not available in Japan at the moment, and even when it is I think there is very little chance it will be available with an English OS.

JAG said...

I'm thinking about buying it overseas (unlocked) and then having it activated with Softbank or similar....

From what I've heard so far, it should work OK here....

Andrew Shuttleworth said...

Basically if you have a working Softbank SIM card, you can put it in a Tyn Tyn II and it will work for voice. To get flat rate data, you have to add the access point settings. Someone at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/windowsmobileinjapan should be able to tell you what they are.

JAG said...

Thanks for that. So you mean in order to support data reception/transmission, I'll need that info from the group. Wouldn't softbank technical have that info?

I spoke with Softbank support on the phone and they said that as long as it were a phone compatible with Japanese standards (seems to be) they could provide a sim chip.

JAG said...

OK
So to summarize...
If I want the HTC Tytn II, I have to get an unlocked one from overseas and voice should be no problem, but if I want to use data, that could be a hassle. Being a non-technical person, I'd be at the mercy of others. Also, voiced concerns about not being "tuned" to the Japan network for voice....

The softbank oferring X01T is a good second option, but only comes in JP OS and that sounds like a tricky fix, once again my need to rely on others for the conversion and if there are problems....

Last, seems like that goofy, limited X02HT would be my last option for web Mobile windows platform....shame that....

Does all this sound about right....

Andrew Shuttleworth said...

@JAG: Your summary is a good one.

Softbank can provide a SIM - the question is whether they will give you the settings you need to do wireless data. My understanding is that they don't officially provide these.

From around April you will have another option though, the X03HT.

Hi Andrew, thanks for the comments.

It's good to hear there will be another choice soon. Problem is, I have budget that I can use to buy a phone, though it needs to be used by late March.

I'll do a search on that phone. Is there a link to info you've found?

Andrew Shuttleworth said...

If budget wasn't an issue for me, I've get a TyTyn II from overseas and try to configure that with DoCoMo or Softbank here. I'd go with DoCoMo first as sometimes people give bad reports about the quality of the Softbank network.

In the worst case you could get a separate device for data.

Andrew Shuttleworth said...

Here's one site for buying devices from overseas: http://www.expansys.jp/

Anyone got any other recommendations?

Andrew
Many thanks. Since I do have budget until late March for this type of phone, that's exactly what I'd like to do.

I was originally hoping to get all set up from Pockettweakies, since he sells the phones and seems to know how to set them up, but when I called, his wife said he was in the hospital long term. Tough break.

I'll check out that link you supplied, and see if they can handle the task.

I'd be up for using any major carrier who could get the phone up and running with as much functionality as possible.

BTW...when I write a comment, it seems to take days to get posted, but once it does, I see your comments withing hours. How do you get your comments posted so quickly?

Jim

Let us know how you get on.

You need an English language interface, right? If not you could always get the X01T or even X01HT. It's a shame that the X03HT won't be here sooner.

As for the comments, I have to moderate them which sometimes takes a few days, but I always make sure to reply after moderating. Volunteer moderators are welcome :-)

JAG said...

Cheers, Andrew...I didn't know you were the moderator!

What will the X03HT look like? Does anyone know?

If I could find a shop that would let me pay fund "ahead" until the until comes out, that may be a solution. I'll contact that shop you linked. They look pretty good.

Do you have any information as to when Pweakies will be back in business?

Andrew Shuttleworth said...

Here's a post on the X03HT: http://www.windowsmobileinjapan.com/2008/01/x03ht-htc-s730-and-x02nk-nokia-n95.html

Not sure when pockettweakies will be back unfortunately.

JAG said...

Cheers for that...

Shame that new 03 is not a touch screen...

JAG said...

OK...
I received an HTC unlocked Tytn II from Hong Kong last week.

I love this thing! I ordered a 8 GB card and I've loaded it with Japanese learning software, Kanji programs, and Japanese/English dictionaries.

A really cool tool! It is a bit hungry on batteries...I have some larger capacity batteries, I'll experiment with those...

Docomo told me it was impossible to set up data since their phones are imode based.

Today, I got my phone utilities set up, but they could not do anything with data because I was lacking the access point settings.

Access point settings are my next Holy Grail....

Andrew Shuttleworth said...

Jag: Congrats on getting your TyTn II. To save battery life only turn on wifi (a big battery hog) when you need it and keep down the screen back light as much as possible.

I'm not 100% sure it is possible for you to get flat rate - but I'm cheering for you.

The first steps to testing it out would be to apply for the BizHodai plan and mopera U:

http://www.docomo.biz/html/rate/plan/bizhodai.html#goriyou
http://www.docomo.biz/html/product/htcz/ (mopera U info linked at the bottom).

You may just have to tell the people in the shop you want to do this and not explain why. If they don't understand just try a different person or different shop. Try telling them them you have a HTC Z at home you want to use it with and your Japanese friend knows how to set it up :-)

Let us know how you get on!

JAG said...

Well, actually, I already signed up for Softbank today for voice and got the phone working. Nice to have that, I needed to switch from Tsuka.

Well, I tried first with Docomo and got flat no's to the sim card from the beginning. Also, they had said there would be problems with data since their system is based on imode.

So, I'm all in on Softbank, which is a shame since the data speed is way slow compared to Docomo's upper level, though I think that high speed hardware are flash cards for computers.

Now I need to find those access point numbers...if anyone has the scoop let me know...

Cheers...Jim
